Logging this all year? The Canada Self-Employed Income, Expense & GST/HST Tracker ($19 CAD, Excel/Google Sheets) records income, expenses by T2125 line, and GST/HST collected and paid, with monthly totals.
5% GST in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the three territories. HST is 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia (since April 1, 2025), and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the rate. For example, in Ontario $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST is $13. Don't just multiply the total by 13%; that overstates the tax.
It depends on the place-of-supply rules, not only where you live. For many services, the rate is based on where your client is, so an Ontario freelancer billing a Nova Scotia client may charge 14% HST rather than 13%. Check the CRA's place-of-supply guidance for your situation.
No. This calculator covers GST/HST only. BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec have separate provincial sales taxes with their own rules and registrations.
Not until you're registered. Most small businesses have to register once their taxable revenue goes over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over the last four consecutive quarters (the small supplier threshold). You can also register voluntarily.
